A 46-year-old American citizen, identified as Rexal Ford, has been arrested in Greece after being suspected of being responsible for the tragic death of a 6-month-old girl, found without signs of life in the Villa Doria Pamphilj park in Rome, just a few meters from her mother's lifeless body, for reasons still unclear.
Ford, who has a criminal record in the United States, was located on the Greek island of Skiathos.
He was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by Italian authorities.
According to the Italian prosecutor's office, his extradition to Italy could take place in 20 to 25 days, however, the possibility of him being handed over to American authorities cannot be ruled out, if the latter make an official request.
Investigations in Rome and the trail of a double murder
Rome prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi said that there are "strong indications" against the 46-year-old for his involvement in the death of the little girl, who, according to preliminary expertise, may have died the day before her body was discovered.
According to Italian media, he is also accused of hiding the body of her mother, who was found naked, stuffed in a bag, under a bush in the park.
Her identity has not yet been officially confirmed, although she is also suspected of being an American citizen.
According to investigators, there is a "reasonable suspicion" that this is a double murder.
Rexal Ford had previously stated during a check by authorities that he was the girl's father, but there is still no scientific evidence to confirm the biological relationship.
Ford had traveled from Fiumicino airport to Greece on June 11 on a Ryanair flight. Greek authorities immediately activated their arrest following an Italian request, while his mobile phone signals made it possible to track him on the island of Skiathos. According to Prosecutor Lo Voi, the arrest occurred “in time”, preventing a possible further escape.
Testimonies
An important contribution to Rome Police investigators was provided by a citizen who contacted the Italian investigative show "Chi l'ha visto?" after the publication of images of the victim's tattoos.
According to the witness, he had seen the couple arguing violently in one of the squares in the historic center of Rome a few days before the bodies were discovered. The conflict had been so violent that it required the intervention of law enforcement, who later identified Ford.
Also, "Chi l'ha visto?" published a photo dated June 5, where Ford appeared with the girl in his arms, wearing a little pink dress, while police officers were around them, called after the baby was crying. At that moment, he had declared that he was the girl's father.
The investigation is also focusing on tracking the movements of Ford, his wife and baby during their stay in Italy. According to records, they had been in Italy since April.
There is no trace of them in the official accommodation records, but it is learned that they benefited from assistance from the organization "Caritas", where Ford's name is registered in the canteen. He had previously been identified by the authorities during the incident of the conflict with the woman.
The three people had been seen frequently in the area of the Villa Pamphilj park, but also in other neighborhoods of Rome. During the week before the tragic event, they had frequented the San Silverio market, near St. Peter's, where they ate and used the public toilets to wash themselves.
Several testimonies have been taken from traders and people living on the streets, who describe Ford as a "violent man".
Italian authorities are also evaluating the possibility of an investigative mission to Greece to question the suspect to fully uncover the incident, starting from the exact identity of the victim and the causes of death, to the possible motive for a double murder.
