A university in Ireland has become the first in the world to open a new branch, for ... influencers in social networks.

South East Technical University (SETU) in Carlow will offer a three-year bachelor of arts qualification in content creation and social media from September 2024.

Applications for the course, which will cover business skills, video and audio editing, creative writing and critical and cultural skills, will open in November this year.

Dr Eleanor O'Leary, a lecturer in media and communication at the university, told RTÉ that interest was high.

"We saw that there was a growing interest in this field from both students and young people, as well as employers. So we continued with the development of the diploma in this field", she said.

The lecturer said that this sector has doubled since 2019 and is now worth between 14 billion and 16 billion euros worldwide.

Dr O'Leary said that employment opportunities ranged from self-employment, collaborations with brands, to working for a company.

"It's a field that has a certain skill set," she added.

"This field builds on existing media and PR and marketing skills, but is also a new field in itself."

"We want to make sure that students will be fully employable when they graduate," O'Leary told The Times.
