The mayor 'arvanitas' of Thessaloniki passes away
Janis Boutaris

The former mayor of Thessaloniki, Janis Boutaris, has passed away at the age of 82.

He was the 60th mayor of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, holding office from January 1, 2011 to August 31, 2019, after having won two consecutive municipal elections, while since 2018 he had decided not to run as a candidate in the next municipal elections .

Recently, Boutaris (Butari) had health problems.

Born on June 13, 1942 in Thessaloniki, he was a businessman, politician, oenologist and graduate in Chemistry, while since January he was a municipal councilor of Thessaloniki with the faction of Spyros Pegas.

According to the Greek media, his origin was Vlach, from Krusheva in North Macedonia, and Voskopoja in Albania. His grandfather was the one who founded the first winery in Naoussa.

Butaris is remembered as a local politician who defended and supported the Albanians, which made him often fall prey to attacks by Greek extremists.
