Freezing weather, more than 1000 Ukrainian towns and villages remain without

Ukraine's power grid operator said on Tuesday that harsh winter weather has left more than 1,000 towns and villages without power in nine regions and urged residents to save energy as the power system has been weakened by Russian attacks.

Electricity consumption was at its highest this week as temperatures fell to around -15°C in many parts of the country, grid operator Ukrenergo said.

"The level of consumption continues to rise due to the significant drop in temperature across the country," the Telegram messaging app said, adding that electricity consumption in the morning was already 5.8% higher than the day before.

"Since this morning, due to bad weather, strong winds, the electricity has been interrupted in 1025 settlements".

The weather caused significant damage to distribution networks with strong winds, frost and a thick layer of ice on equipment, which delayed repair work, Ukrenergo said.

Vitaliy Kim, governor of the southern Mykolaiv region where 215 towns and villages are without power, said the ice on power cables was more than 5 cm thick.

Ukrenergo said the power system was already working at maximum capacity and asked residents to conserve electricity as much as possible and avoid using several electrical appliances at the same time to help the system cope.

"Currently, electricity is sufficient to supply all commercial and household consumers. But a large increase in consumption creates an additional load for power plants, which are already working at their maximum, and must increase production very quickly and significantly, and this can lead to technological interruptions", said Ukrenergo.
