The family of a New Zealand father, who has been on the run for almost four years with his three children, has made a public appeal for him to return home.
The appeal comes as one of the family's first public reactions since his disappearance.
Tom Phillips fled to the rugged Waikato mountains in December 2021 with his children, Jayda (12), Maverick (10) and Ember (9), after a dispute with their mother. Phillips does not have legal custody of the children.
"We miss you so much, I miss being a part of your life and I want to see you and the children," his sister, Rozzi Phillips , said in an interview with journalist Paddy Gower. She hopes her message will reach her brother, after attempts to contact him by email and phone have failed.
His mother also sent him a touching letter, which was read during the interview.
"It hurts me every time I see pictures of you and the kids, thinking about what could have been if you hadn't left. Jayda, Maverick, Ember, I love you so much and miss you every day. I hope you come back one day," she wrote.
The family describes Tom as a man of humor and extraordinary survival skills, a master of building, hunting and living in extreme conditions. This is what made his hiding in the remote area of Marokopa, a small coastal settlement with fewer than 100 inhabitants, last so long.

Police have had difficulty locating him, and there are suspicions that he may have been helped by others. His sister says that if this is true, she would like to at least have some sign that the family and children are okay.
Phillips is no stranger to such disappearances. In September 2021, he was reported missing for 19 days with his children before suddenly appearing at his parents' farm, claiming to have been on a "long camping trip to cool down." He was charged with wasting police time and resources, but a few months later he disappeared again.
Since then, sightings and evidence of him have been rare. Police believe he committed a bank robbery and an attempted robbery of a convenience store in 2023, and in October 2024, he appeared in a video recorded by young hunters. However, the search yielded no results.
"It's time for the children to get out of this situation and move on with their lives. Everything can be resolved, but it's been too long. Let's close this story and let them return home safely," said Detective Andrew Saunders.
