Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has proposed the Speaker of Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, as a candidate for President of the Republic.
The vote on whether or not to approve the proposal will be held on January 25 in the Assembly.
"In the coming period and in a turbulent international environment, the country needs a President of the Republic with a long history in public and with political characteristics," said Mitsotakis.
He added that Tassula's name enjoys broad consensus and that proof of this is the fact that he was elected three times as President of the Greek Parliament with the strongest majority in the post-colonial period: with 283, 270 and 249 votes.
For his part, Konstantinos Tasoulas, in his intervention in the Assembly immediately after the Prime Minister's statement, highlighted the preservation of national unity and harmonious functioning as the main priorities.
