UK announces £50m aid for Syria

The UK says it will provide £50m in international aid to vulnerable Syrians "in their time of need".

Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the emergency aid as he urged the transitional government in Syria to protect human rights, destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles and combat terrorism.

A statement said the funding will enable "an urgent increase in humanitarian assistance when needs are highest" and support the delivery of essential public services in the country.

Of the aid package, £30 million will help provide immediate assistance to more than a million people, including access to food, shelter and emergency healthcare.

The remaining money will be allocated to help Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan. The UK says this will reduce the likelihood that vulnerable Syrians will have to make dangerous journeys to leave Syria and the region.

"The fall of the terrible Assad regime offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the people of Syria," the Foreign Secretary said.

"We are committed to supporting the Syrian people as they chart a new course," he continued.

In addition to providing humanitarian aid to Syrians, the UK is also committing £120,000 to be made available to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The UK says this will help the Syrian government meet its commitment to protect chemical weapons sites and stop weapons falling into the wrong hands.
