Trump says the US is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario, in another clash with Canada amid the trade war between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering renaming Lake Ontario "America's Lake" as trade tensions with Canada continue to escalate.

Lake Ontario is located on the border between the US and Canada, with the state of New York on one side and the Canadian city of Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario, on the other.

"The US is seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, as we do not expect to do any more business with Ontario," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

This is not the first time that Trump has sought to change the name of a geographical area as part of a strongly nationalistic approach.

In January 2025, he signed an executive order to use the name “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico in official American documents and communications.

Mexico then opposed the change, arguing that the US cannot legally change the name of such an international space. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a state's sovereignty extends up to 12 nautical miles from its coastline.
