First case of West Nile virus confirmed in Northern Cyprus

The Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) reported a case of West Nile virus in the capital Lefkosa on Wednesday. The virus is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of culex mosquitoes, the ministry said in a written statement.

There is no vaccine or drug treatment for the infection, and people with symptoms may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes, the statement added.

The ministry said it has taken the necessary measures against the submicroscopic infectious agent and mosquito spraying has continued continuously.

Mosquitoes that carry the virus transmit it to humans and animals, and there is no human-to-human transmission. The statement further states that it is very important to protect yourself from the virus, calling on citizens to frequently empty the water collected under pots, containers and tires, as well as the water of decorative pools in their homes to prevent the reproduction of mosquitoes. .
