Kiev officials reported an unusually heavy airstrike by Russia in the early hours of Tuesday, including the use of drones and missiles. This marks the eighth airstrike in the Ukrainian capital this month.

According to a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app, Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, described the latest airstrike by Russia as unprecedented in its intensity, with the largest number of attack missiles launched for a short time.

"According to preliminary information, the vast majority of enemy targets in Kiev's airspace were detected and destroyed," Popko said.

The number of targets hit and destroyed during the airstrike in Kiev is currently unknown.

Russia had suspended its long-range missile strikes for several weeks, but resumed the tactic in late April, launching multiple strikes in recent days, with Kiev a frequent target.

Despite the attacks, Ukraine has successfully repelled most of them.

Missile debris fell in several districts of Kyiv, including Obolonski, Shevchenkivski, Solomyanski and Darnitski, on Tuesday, according to officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that falling debris burned several cars and caused damage to a building in the Solomyanskyi district in the western part of the capital.

Three people were injured in the incident.

According to Klitschko, a drone strike was repelled by air defense systems south of Boryspil.

Borispil is located southeast of Kyiv and is home to the capital's main civilian airport, which is currently closed.

The military administration reported that damage in other districts was not extensive and there was no immediate information on possible casualties.

Air raid sirens were heard almost across the country for more than three hours on Tuesday, in Kiev and the surrounding area./REL
