One of the dozens of defendants accused of raping French woman Gisèle Pelicot after she was drugged by her ex-husband pleaded guilty Thursday, saying he was sorry for his crime.
44-year-old Lionel R., a supermarket worker and father of three, is one of the people accused of participating in Pelicot's multiple rapes over a decade.
The ex-husband of the 72-year-old, Dominique Pelicot, has admitted that he drugged her into a "coma" state and invited strangers he knew online to rape her.
Lionel R., admitted that he had raped Gisèle on December 2, 2018, although he added that he did not intend to. "Since I never received the approval of Ms. Pelicot, I had no choice but to accept the facts".
He then turned to her, “I'm sorry, I can only imagine the nightmare you've been through… and I'm part of that nightmare. I know my apology won't change what happened, but I want to say it."
“If I had known that she was not aware of what was going to happen, I would not have gone. I should have made sure she agreed. I didn't talk to her, so I didn't get her consent. I feel guilty for what I did. "I never said to myself, 'I'm going to rape that woman,'" Lionel R. told the judge, adding, "I am guilty of rape."
He then stated that he should have run away when he saw that she was unconscious and that he was too stupid to say anything.
The 44-year-old tried to shift some of the blame to Dominique Pelicot, telling the court he had done what he asked. Lionel R. said his explanations were "not very clear" but believed he was simply participating in a game.
"There was talk about medical drugs. Sometimes she drank it and sometimes he gave it to her. I didn't ask myself many questions. I never thought she might not be part of this game. That was my first big mistake."
Dominique Pelicot has accepted the charges, telling the court that he was a "rapist". He stated that all the men knew they were coming to rape his drugged, unconscious wife. Among the 50 defendants there is a firefighter, a prison guard, a nurse and a journalist.
Some have admitted that Pelicot told them he was drugging his ex-wife, while others say they believed they were taking part in a game organized by the couple.
One of the defense lawyers told Gisèle Pelicot that "there is rape and there is rape", as an attempt to defend some of the accused's statements, but she replied:
"No, there are no different types of rape. Rape is rape". Afterwards, the lawyer apologized, saying that he only wanted to make a legal distinction between the definition of rape and that of the "media". "I'm sorry that these words hurt and shocked you."
Photos of Gisèle Pelicot which she did not know were taken by her ex-husband were also shown in court, raising questions about whether she had been under the influence of tranquilizers.
The defense also asked her if she understood that men who saw these photos online might think she wanted sex, even though drugged. She replied that they could "ask if I accepted it".
Gisèle said that she felt accused as guilty, while the 50 defendants sitting next to her ex-husband saw everything. She said she understood why women are reluctant to report rape.
The trial continues until December.
