The German tabloid "Bild", the best-selling newspaper in all of Europe, communicated to hundreds of editors that they will be replaced by AI. Will chatbots sound the death knell for human-generated media content?

Axel Springer SE, the largest European publishing house, announced that it will replace a number of editorial jobs with Artificial Intelligence.

In an email to staff (on June 19), Springer stated that he will "unfortunately be separated from working colleagues who will be replaced by AI and/or digital world processes."

The functions of editorial directors, page editors, proofreaders, secretaries and photo editors will no longer exist as they do today.

The job cuts at Springer, home of news brands such as Bild and Die Welt, will raise fears that AI will wreak havoc across the world's media industry.

Chatbots like ChatGPT can be used to write news, rendering human journalists useless.

Artificial Intelligence has trampled humanity

"For the first time, it is the machine itself that is creating the language," declared Ranga Yogeshwar, one of Germany's leading independent science journalists.

At Deutsche Welle's Global Media Forum in Bonn, Yogeshwar discussed how generative AI is changing content creation.

"The car has violated our culture, our civilization," he said.

The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report stated that 2023 will be "the year of development for Artificial Intelligence and its application in journalism".

The report states that AI transcription tools are now routine in newsrooms, and many use them to select stories to recommend to users, create captions and text-to-speech.

Even some media companies are experimenting with virtual news anchors. And apps like Artifact are already providing online, AI-generated news digests to readers.

IA empowers journalists

But some media analysts believe that AI, by taking over mundane tasks, will allow journalists to focus on investigative reporting and in-depth analysis.

Many journalists hope that demand for unique, researched and human-told stories will increase when people have had enough of AI-generated news.

But even if this turns out to be true, thousands of editors, like those at the German tabloid Bild, may have lost their jobs.
