The Japanese Space Agency's "Slim" mission arrives on the moon, considered a remarkable success, making Japan the fifth nation to achieve this feat, after the US, Russia, China and India. The lander launched on September 7, 2023 from Earth, touched the surface of the Moon at 16:22 on January 19, 2024, on its far side.
"Slim" has chosen as an exploration target the Shioli crater, located in the region called Oceanum Procellarum, where it is hypothesized that the lunar mantle is exposed on the surface. The possibility of studying the rocks and their composition in this area can be very important to better understand the origin of the Earth and its satellite.

In the mission, there are two Rovers that will analyze the terrain, where the first has scientific instruments for measuring temperature and radiation, while the other is equipped with a video camera.
The lander began landing maneuvers at 16:00 from an altitude of 15 km from the surface, completing the high-precision landing in 22 minutes, as the targeting was in an area of 100 m, unlike previous landings that predicted several km.
The mission was intended to test a "precision" technology for landing vehicles and give a new boost to Japan's space program, which has faced many problems in recent years.
"SLIM runs on its own battery and we are prioritizing its data transfer to Earth," Hitoshi Kuninaka, head of JAXA, said at a press conference.
This craft, nicknamed the "lunar sniper," attempted to land within 100 meters of its target, instead of many kilometers like other conventional spacecraft. JAXA says this technology will be a very powerful tool for future exploration of the Moon's poles, where oxygen and water may exist. However, it will take about a month to verify whether SLIM has achieved its goals.
JAXA seeks to play a bigger role in space, in cooperation with the US and to beat competition from China. Among other things, it plans to send an astronaut to the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program in the coming years.
To date, only four countries, the former Soviet Union, the US, China and India, have successfully landed a spacecraft on the Moon.
