The Supreme Court ruled today in favor of former US President Donald Trump, stating that federal states cannot remove him from the ballot for his actions that led to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

The court in an unopposed decision overturned the Colorado Supreme Court's decision, which determined that Trump could not serve again as president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

The court said the Colorado Supreme Court had wrongly assumed that states can determine whether a presidential candidate is ineligible under a provision of the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

The decision makes it clear that Congress, not the states, must set the rules for how the 14th Amendment provision can be implemented. As such the ruling applies to all states, not just Colorado.

"Because the Constitution makes Congress, not the states, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against all federal officials and nominees, we reverse it," the Supreme Court's decision said.
