30 billion euro plan / Germany prepares for war, will build up to one million

German authorities have announced a massive project to strengthen civil protection in the event of a military conflict, through the construction of up to a million shelters across the country. The news was announced by Ralph Tiesler, head of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK), in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

According to him, Germany faces a growing danger in the face of a possible military attack in Europe, and therefore a quick and organized response is required. The project envisages the adaptation of tunnels, metro stations, underground garages and other public spaces, in order to serve as shelters in emergencies.

Tiesler said that within the summer, a complete plan will be presented, which will include equipping these shelters with water, food and camping beds, enabling citizens to stay in them for several days. The plan will cost around 30 billion euros and will also include the expansion of national alert systems, through the existing NINA warning platform.

Currently, Germany has only 579 public shelters in a usable state, which can accommodate around 477 thousand people – a very low figure compared to the country's population. Most of these shelters are leftover objects from the time of World War II and have not been maintained since 2007.

At the same time, there is a significant increase in the demand for private shelters across Europe, especially in Germany, France and the Baltic states, reflecting a widespread public concern about security and crisis preparedness.
