After news that a data cable connecting Germany and Finland had been cut, Germany ruled out an accident. It remains unclear who is behind the act of sabotage.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that the damage to an undersea data cable linking Germany to Finland was likely an act of sabotage.
The damage to the C-Lion1 cable was first reported on Monday. Authorities said the 1,173-kilometer-long line had been cut, although the impact is unlikely to be felt by most.
Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin also said Monday that a second undersea cable had been damaged, according to French news agency AFP.
The incident took place in the same maritime region where the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged in 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"It can't be just a coincidence"
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Europe will remain united in the face of hybrid threats after the cutting of fiber optic cables in the Baltic Sea.
"We are experiencing this in Germany as well [...] with cyber attacks, monitoring of critical infrastructure, packages suddenly exploding when transported by plane and yesterday [...] a data cable between Finland and Germany that may have also affected Sweden," Baerbock said. "These cannot be mere coincidences.
What else does Germany say about the damaged Baltic Sea cable?
"No one believes that these cables were accidentally cut. I also don't want to believe the versions that it was the anchors that accidentally damaged these cables," Pistorius said ahead of a meeting with EU defense ministers in Brussels.
"Therefore, we must affirm, without knowing exactly who it is, that it is a "hybrid" action. And we also have to assume, without knowing yet, that this is sabotage," he added.
Pistorius was unable to provide any evidence for his suspicions, but his Estonian counterpart, Hanno Pevkur, also said it was not a "natural cause" based on their preliminary information.
The German and Finnish foreign ministers issued a joint statement on Monday evening: "Our European security is not only threatened by Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, but also by hybrid warfare fueled by malicious actors."
