Germany will pay most of the gas bills for households and businesses for the period of December, as part of an effort to protect citizens and the economy from the energy crisis fueled by the war in Ukraine.

According to the scheme, full reimbursement will be made after two months as well as next spring with a more differentiated subsidy scheme.

From March 2023 to the end of April 2024, households will pay €0.12 per kilowatt hour for the first 80% of gas usage they used throughout 2022.

Under their proposals costing around 90 billion euros, businesses are expected to pay 7 cents per kilowatt hour for 70 percent of their gas use in 2022, starting in January.

This roughly corresponds to the level of prices expected in the future while the plan aims to prevent prices from rising beyond this.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government announced that it would work very quickly to implement a two-phase plan recommended by a panel of experts.

The panel, which included industry and trade union representatives, scientists and politicians, presented the findings to Scholz and the country's economy and finance ministers earlier this week.

Berlin has been criticized by its EU neighbors after approving a 200 billion euro package to ease further price rises amid warnings in Berlin that Europe's biggest economy must cut its gas consumption by 20 percent with the arrival of winter as a measure to save energy.

Many European countries have proposed similar subsidies for fossil fuels in the face of rising prices. But some of Germany's neighbors have criticized the huge sum Berlin is putting aside, arguing it will drive them out of the market. Russia began reducing gas supplies to Germany through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in June and cut them off completely more than a month ago.
