Europe should shoulder the costs for Ukraine. This fact has been announced by the number two in the White House, JD Vance.
During an interview with Fox News, Vance suggested that European countries should shoulder the main burden of Ukraine's security guarantees. While the US should help if necessary to end the war and killings, the US president expects Europe to play the lead role in this.
"I don't think we should carry the burden in the United States. I think we should be helpful if necessary to stop the war and stop the killing, but I think we should wait, and the President certainly expects Europe to play a leading role here. But no matter what happens, no matter what form this takes, the Europeans are going to have to take the lion's share of the burden. It's their continent, it's their security, and the President has been very clear that they will take significant steps here," said Vice President Vance.
Vance stressed that Russia wants the territories of Ukraine that it already occupies but some that it does not.
“I think the president’s preference and my preference would be, let’s let them meet regardless. You don’t have to solve every issue, and sometimes leaders sitting face to face can break the deadlock that their teams don’t necessarily have the ability to do. There are really two big questions that remain. The first is that Ukraine wants to know that it’s not going to be invaded again by Russia. It wants to have territorial integrity for a long time into the future. The Russians want certain pieces of territory, most of which they’ve occupied, but some of which they haven’t. So that’s the crux of the negotiations,” he added.
Following the Ukraine summit in Washington, the issue of credible security guarantees for Kiev following a possible peace deal is coming into focus. The question of the location and timing of a meeting between Putin and Zelensky remains open.
