A double rainbow has appeared over Buckingham Palace where thousands of people have gathered to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II, who died this afternoon.

Many took pictures of the rainbow, which could be seen over major landmarks across London, including the Elizabeth Tower in Westminster and the Queen Victoria Memorial.

A woman placed the first bouquet at the Queen's central residence just after 5pm and the crowd outside Buckingham Palace has since grown to thousands.

"It's a historic moment," said one of them. Another said the Queen was a sign of continuity and "she represented all four parts of our United Kingdom".

"Seeing him go feels like the end of an era and a lot of uncertainty," he told the BBC.

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom's longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday at the age of 96. Her family gathered at her home in Balmoral, Scotland, as her health worsened.

The royal palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon." The Queen took the throne in 1952 and reigned for 70 years. After her death, her eldest son, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, takes the throne.
