The position of the United States of America on the tensions created in the north of Kosovo is clear: the government led by Albin Kurti is to blame, it did not listen to the advice of internationals.
In an interview for "BBC RADIO", the American special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, once again pointed the finger at the kurti, stating that the tensions in the three municipalities of Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq were the result of the lack of will of the prime minister to listen to the international community.
"This escalation was partly the result of the lack of will on the part of the Kosovar side to listen to the international community, insisting on the use of municipal facilities. It was important for us to build trust between communities in the midst of everything. Unfortunately, our efforts to coordinate with the Government of Kosovo were opposed", said Escobar.
According to the senior Washington official, Kurti had promised the new presidents in the north would exercise only administrative authority until a solution was found.
"There was no need to go to those buildings. They have no real value. They are mostly dry now. Kurti has assured us that those mayors will only exercise administrative authorities, to perform basic municipal services, but it turned into a clash of wills between those who did not want the new mayors to take office and those who insisted that the mayors be in those municipality for symbolic reasons", he said, among other things.
Washington has submitted specific requests to the prime minister to calm the situation.
"We have ordered him to withdraw the mayors from the municipal buildings, to remove the police officers from the buildings, and then, urgently, to start discussions on the formation of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority," he said. Escobar.
Even the senior advisor of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet, has requested an immediate de-escalation of the situation. In a post on the Twitter social network, he announced that he had a telephone conversation with Serbian President Aleksander Vučić, where he will take steps to help mitigate the crisis.
