The Wilmington court in Delaware has found the son of US President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, guilty.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to three felonies related to the purchase of a gun in 2018 when, according to prosecutors, he lied on a gun purchase form, saying he was not a drug user or drug addict.

The jury found Hunter Biden guilty of making false claims on a gun purchase form and unlawful possession of a gun for 11 days.

US law prohibits drug addicts from carrying guns.

As the jury's verdict was delivered, Hunter Biden looked on without reaction. Afterwards, he hugged his lawyers and barely smiled. He kissed his wife, Melissa, with whom he left the court together.

He faces up to 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine, but first-time offenders are not given such severe sentences

The court adjourned the sentencing for another day, after the jury found him guilty.

The sentence will be handed down by federal judge Maryellen Noreika, appointed by Trump in 2018 but supported by Delaware's two Democratic senators.

His father could in any case grant him a presidential pardon or commute the sentence, but the White House has officially ruled out that possibility.

Several family members, including First Lady Jill Biden and President Biden's brother, James Biden, were present in the courtroom in Delaware. Mrs. Biden was present during almost the entire trial, missing only one day due to participation in ceremonies in honor of the anniversary of the landing of Allied troops in Normandy, France.

Hunter Biden, 54, had pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of lying about his drug addiction on a government form for the purchase of a Colt Cobra pistol and unlawful possession of the weapon for 11 days.

This is the first time in the US that a member of the President's family has been found guilty of a crime by a court during the term of the president's father.
