The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, held a press conference on Monday, where he also spoke about the lifting of sanctions for Kosovo. Borrell said he expects them to go away.
"If these sanctions are lifted, I hope so." At least that is my proposal. Even in a gradual form, but quickly. This can create a scenario where I'm not saying that the dialog will restart, but at least it won't end abruptly. The two leaders have not met for a long time in the framework of the dialogue and I do not want to give up before the end of my mandate", said Borrell.
He also spoke about the meeting that the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, will hold tomorrow in Brussels.
Borrell said that the problem remains the non-implementation of the agreements reached so far.
"I continue to try to reach an operational solution in the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, because we already have an agreement. We have the Ohrid Agreement. The problem is that the agreements have to be implemented and the parties have not been able to implement them for one reason or another and I think it was necessary to resume the high-level meetings to know where we are, especially at a time when the member countries they are discussing my proposal for the lifting of sanctions against Kosovo", he declared.
Sanctions for Kosovo were imposed by the European Commission last year. The reason for this EC decision was the escalation of the security situation in the north.
These measures included: the temporary suspension of working groups for the Stabilization and Association Agreement, the non-invitation of Kosovo to high-level meetings and the suspension of bilateral visits.
The programming of funds for Kosovo, which were planned to be delivered through the Investment Framework in the Western Balkans and the IPA 2024 Pre-Accession Instruments, was also suspended.
