Public flight tracking websites showed two US F/A-18 fighter jets approached Venezuelan airspace around noon on Tuesday, conducting an extended flight over the Gulf of Venezuela as Washington ramps up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.

Data from sites like Flightradar24 showed that the planes crossed the Gulf Strait and performed maneuvers over the Gulf of Venezuela for more than half an hour, attracting great public attention as thousands of people followed their position online in real time.

A US defense official confirmed the mission, saying the Department of Defense "conducts routine and lawful operations in international airspace, including over the Gulf of Venezuela."

"We will continue to fly safely, professionally, and in accordance with international law to protect the homeland, monitor illegal activities, and support stability across the Americas," said an official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The move comes amid a sharp escalation in military tensions and US operations targeting Venezuela. Tensions rose last Saturday after US President Donald Trump announced that the airspace over and around Venezuela would be considered completely closed.

The US has carried out at least 22 attacks in both the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean on suspected drug-trafficking vessels since September, killing at least 87 people. Last week, Trump repeated his warning that strikes on Venezuelan land-based drug trafficking networks would soon begin.

While the Trump administration claims to be targeting Venezuela as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, Maduro's government counters by saying that Washington is seeking "to appropriate Venezuela's vast oil reserves through the lethal use of military force," stressing that the anti-drug efforts are merely excuses for an illegal attempt to remove Maduro from power.
