Australia's parliament has passed a law banning social media for children under 16.
The law enters into force in November 2025.
The decision comes after Australian regulators warned tech companies to beef up security.
Australia's Senate approved a ban on social media late Thursday, the last day of this year's session, after months of intense public debate and a fraught parliamentary process.
Under the new law, tech companies must take "reasonable steps" to prevent underage users from accessing social media services or face fines of nearly $50 million.
The ban is expected to apply to Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X, but this list could be expanded.
