The representatives of the QUINT countries in Kosovo - the USA, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and France - asked the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to take steps that would lead to the escalation of the situation in the north of Kosovo.

The US ambassador, Jeffrey Hovenier, who attended the meeting, said that "there is an agreement that the escalation of the situation must happen, but I don't know how it will happen."

"We believe that it is not necessary for the elected mayors [of the municipalities in the north] to work every day in the municipal buildings. For the short term, we recommend that this not be done," said Hovenier.

According to him, the Government of Kosovo has been able to find ways for the mayors to swear in alternative buildings and avoid the conflict.

Such an approach, Hovenier added, should also be applied to their work. He declined to say whether Kurti has accepted this recommendation or not.

"We are concerned about the ongoing developments there and have asked the Prime Minister to take some steps to ensure that de-escalation is achieved," he said.

Since the morning of May 29, groups of Serbs have been protesting in Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq.

Troops of the peacekeeping mission of NATO in Kosovo, KFOR, have intervened to disperse the Serbian protestors, gathered in front of the building of the municipality of Zveçan. Members of the Kosovo Police were not present at the time of the intervention in Zveçan.

On May 26, five policemen were injured during clashes with Serb protesters who threw stones at them. The police responded with stun grenades and tear gas.

Tensions reignited in Kosovo's northern municipalities after the mayors emerged from the April 23 emergency elections - all Albanians - were opposed by local Serbs.

The previous heads of the four municipalities in the north, North Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and Leposaviç, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, were from the Serbian List. However, they resigned in November last year, as a sign of dissatisfaction with a decision of the Government of Kosovo to re-register cars with RKS - Republic of Kosovo license plates.

The April 23 elections were boycotted by the Serbian List and by the Serbian majority population in the north, which now does not accept the results, namely the new presidents./REL
