Bomb alert in front of the Russian embassy in the US

There has been a heavy law enforcement presence near the Russian Embassy in Washington following reports of a suspicious package near the building.

Reports say the suspicious parcel was thrown over the fence by a passerby. Reporters on the scene say multiple agencies are currently on the scene to investigate.

The Russian Embassy notified the United States Secret Service, where the team then arrived to investigate the package.

The Russian Embassy, located at 2641 Tunlaw Rd NW in Washington DC, was surrounded by multiple forces.

According to witnesses, some residents were not allowed to enter nearby neighborhoods for some time. After inspections and checks, the suspicious package was deemed safe and then destroyed, while authorities did not provide details about its contents.

It comes after Spain announced it had increased security after a number of letter bombs were sent to high-profile targets, including the prime minister. On Wednesday, a similar device exploded at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, slightly injuring an employee. Officials claim the defense minister was among other targets.
