Alarm in Europe/ Bild: Jihadist cell plans attacks for Christmas and New Year

A jihadist cell is said to be planning attacks in Europe between Christmas and New Year.

This is what "Bild" newspaper writes. Terrorists aim to strike in Germany, Austria and Spain during Christmas Masses or on December 31.

Several jihadists involved in the plan were arrested on Saturday, namely in Vienna, the Ottakring district and Saarland, Germany. In Austria, authorities have raised the threat level, particularly tightening security measures at Christian places of worship as potential targets.

Checks at the cathedrals in Cologne and Vienna

At Cologne Cathedral, police dog units intervened to search for explosives after indications of a possible attack. At Christmas midnight mass, all worshipers will be screened before entering the cathedral. A similar measure will concern St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. According to "Bild", the arrested jihadists are Tajiks who are said to have planned attacks on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Khorasan Province (ISPK), a branch of the terrorist group in Afghanistan.

Alarm also in Italy for the night of the change of years

Even in Italy, attention remains very high. In a circular sent to all prefects by the Department of Public Security, we read that "many people will gather in squares, clubs and restaurants on New Year's Eve and, given the current delicate international political context, characterized by worsening tensions, especially in the Middle East area, which have increased the risk of terrorist acts, these celebrations "represent events that must be given special attention in terms of protecting public order and security".
