Freezing temperatures combined with strong winds and snow wreaked havoc across Nordic countries on Thursday, leaving thousands without power and many more stranded in their cars on highways.

Meanwhile, heavy rain in Germany, France and the Netherlands has again caused flooding in the region, which has continued in the last two weeks. One person was reported dead in France.

The storm caused transport disruptions in the countries of the Nordic region, where traffic chaos was reported, as a result of the closure of parts of highways and main roads. Trouble in rail services was also reported.

About 4,000 homes were left without power in Sweden, where temperatures fell to minus 38 degrees Celsius, according to Swedish public radio. In the southern parts of the country, drivers were left stranded in their vehicles, or evacuated to a nearby sports complex, where they spent the night.

In Denmark, police urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel as wind and snow gripped northern and western parts of the country.

In Lapland, the municipality of Enonetekio in Finland, near the border with Norway and Sweden, the lowest temperature in this country this winter was recorded on Thursday, minus 42.5 degrees Celsius.

In Germany, heavy rain returned to regions that faced persistent flooding over the past two weeks. Chancellor Olaf Scholz planned on Thursday to make his second visit in a week to the southern city of Sangerhausen.

After several days of rain, several cities in northern France were flooded. Hundreds of people have been evacuated in recent days. This area was also hit by floods in November and December.

A 73-year-old man was found dead in his half-submerged car near the city of Nantes, French authorities said. He was reported missing, after he left home to buy bread and did not return./REL
