Tourism boosts demand for meat products, live animal imports hit record in April

The import of live animals in April of this year has reached an absolute record since January 2005, the last year for which INSTAT has data. The figures speak of about 744 million lek import of live animals in April, increasing by 60.9%, compared to April last year.

But which countries registered the highest import of live animals for the month of April? The data show Greece as the main partner with about 176 million ALL of import in April of the current year. After Greece, Romania, Hungary, Kosovo and Italy follow.

Imports of live animals for meat are increasing year after year, but this year the trend seems to have been even stronger, reaching a record in April. In the first four months of the year, the value of the import of live animals reached 2.5 billion ALL, increasing by about 63%

But what were the main reasons for this growth? Undoubtedly, the strong growth of tourism has increased the demand for meat products in our country. As is known in Albanian cuisine, meat is an important product and the high number of tourists may have encouraged the consumption of meat. However, according to data analyzed earlier by "Scan Intel", in Albania meat consumption represents about 6% of the Gross Domestic Product. According to figures from Eurostat, this rate places our country in the undisputed first place and without other rivals in Europe.

But another reason could be the decrease in the number of cattle. According to an analysis by "Scan Intel" based on EUROSTAT data, as far as cattle are concerned, mainly cows for livestock which serve only for meat consumption, the number of heads in Albania has decreased by about 32.6% in almost ten years. This is the biggest drop in the region and in Europe, according to the figures of the European Statistics Agency.
