For several months, freelancers have been opposing the new tax regime that weighs on them, which is calculated from 15-23 percent, with the argument that it is an unfair taxation in relation to small businesses, unaffordable for the self-employed, and the most high in the region.
But how is this tax rate compared to countries in the region?
Specifically in Albania, the self-employed who are categorized as free professionals, from this year, according to the new income tax law, went directly from a tax rate of 0, to a progressive tax rate starting from 15 percent to 23 percent percent of the profit, depending on the profit that each subject has accumulated.
Referring to ALTAX data, Kosovo applies a tax rate of 9% on profit for freelancers, and other countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia apply tax at the level of 10% of profit for these subjects.
While Serbia has a tax rate of 10-20%. So if we look at these figures, Albania applies the highest level of taxation in the region for the self-employed, despite the challenges it faces, such as the growing trend of emigration, the lack of labor force, etc.
But how is this tax calculated in Albania? For taxpayers with the legal status of a Natural Person, the calculation of prepayments is carried out with the progressive rates: 15% up to the amount of profit 14 million ALL and 23% for any value of profit above 14 million ALL. For taxpayers with a different legal status than a natural person, regardless of their tax liability, the calculation of prepayments is carried out at the rate of 15% on the profit.
29,000 businesses in the country that are categorized as free professions have been notified of the profit tax obligations that they must pay in advance in the month of March and according to the law they have until June 30 to liquidate the first installment.
