How to sell olive oil in the EU. It clears the guide from production to

The Albanian Investment Development Agency has developed a comprehensive new guide that aims to help producers successfully export olive oil to high-value international markets.

Referring to the document, the olive sector in Albania has an ancient tradition of great socio-economic importance and strongly linked to employment and rural development in general. Also, it is important in terms of rural tourism and international trade, considering the types of autochthonous cultivars and the specific sensorial characteristics of the oils produced from them. Compared to other Mediterranean countries, the olive sector in Albania is less developed, both in terms of the number of plants per inhabitant (about 3.5 plants per inhabitant, compared to 4-10 plants per inhabitant in Italy, Spain and Greece) as well also related to the yield per plant and the quality of the product in general.

In total, there are about 12 million olive trees, with more than 28 typical Mediterranean varieties. Due to its nature and structure, Albania is very suitable for producing organic products. On the basis of the bilateral agreements and the SAA, which are in force, Albania can export olive oil to the European Union markets tax-free.

The purpose of the guide is to exploit the potential of this product, to give it added value by exporting it to the European or international market. This means that Albania can export "high quality certified organic olive oil".

But how can the presence of this product be expanded in world markets? Referring to the guide, this process starts from production, where farmers are advised to carry out regular soil tests which are essential as they provide valuable information about nutrient levels, pH and overall soil health.

To add organic matter; apply organic mulches, optimize irrigation by applying the drip irrigation method; to continuously monitor and adjust the weight of the soil; use organic fertilizers; implement soil erosion measures; control olive pests and diseases; as well as maintaining hygiene and prudent use of pesticides. Instructions are also given on picking, using containers, transporting olives to the factory, temperature control during processing, etc.

As far as marketing is concerned, farmers must take care of origin determination and labelling. Producers must strictly implement EU requirements and documentation in order to export, such as those on olive oil quality, content, packaging and labelling, as well as the appropriate export documentation.

Due to numerous droughts, the production of olives in the country has significantly lost ground. Official data from the Institute of Statistics show that a total of 117.6 thousand tons of olives were produced in 2023 from 157.7 that were produced in 2022, with a decrease recorded at 40.1 thousand tons.
