Our country has the largest percentage of people in the Region who face more difficulties in purchasing medicines and health services that are not covered by the Health Insurance scheme. This is according to data from the Balkan Barometer survey, which was carried out by the Regional Cooperation Council.
33% of the 1000 people questioned in Albania claimed that during the last year, their family had at least once faced difficulties to buy the referred medicines that were not covered by the insurance scheme.
In other countries of the Region, citizens faced fewer difficulties in securing medicines. For example, only 15% of the respondents in Bosnia claimed that they could not secure drugs outside the insurance scheme.
This percentage in Kosovo was 13%, North Macedonia 31%, in Montenegro 25% and in Serbia 12%.
Also Albania and North Macedonia had the highest percentage of people in the Region (36% each) who could not afford the costs of health services that were not covered by the insurance scheme.
Citizens' concerns about drug costs come in direct proportion to the funds provided by national governments for drug reimbursement.
The Albanian government provides the lowest level of funds for drug reimbursement in the European ranking according to WHO statistics.
In 2023, our country imported 26.8 billion lek (255.7 million euro) of pharmaceutical products, but only about 12 billion lek or 44% were covered by the reimbursement fund made available by the Albanian government.
