Society in crisis, not just in transition

Throughout the whole day yesterday, I have a stronger desire than ever to run away from Albania. For the first time since I returned, yesterday I wanted not to keep my children in this country for a second.

Yesterday, we all woke up to another tragic news. A 14-year-old boy lost his life in a fight inside a school, the victim of a conflict started on social networks.

This was news that, more than an announcement, was a reminder of what happens every day in our schools. Endless horrors, spawn of a society that has lost its way.

Children can never be blamed for this, except that the one who committed the macabre act was a child. We all have them together.

All of us who create the idea every day that easy money is value. We who raise them in the family with the idea that you are a pretty man only if you stay as little as possible in the family and as much as possible in your pleasures. All of us who show that one "strong" includes 100 "educated". We who feed them with the desire to become a director on the first day of work, and when you become a director, you will be able to keep that position if you promote through electoral campaigns the models that these children, our children, will resemble.

The culture that feeds violence

Why do these things happen in Albania? Or rather, why do they happen so often and seem so natural? Because we live in a country where violence is not punished, but often it is glorified. When my sons started their teenage years I started learning the songs that used to wake them up in the morning. I know so many of their songs and they all have violence and crime in them.

"I, I have two acres of mine in my bag, so I left the calculations at midnight; for me the cars are the fastest; you know my team, we the hardest", says one of them. I remember like today the moment when I heard it for the first time. At first I didn't understand what he was saying. I was just listening to the melody. But when I connected the words, I was horrified. It was an open call for the possession and use of weapons, for clearing accounts. So, to commit a crime.

Of course, such texts cannot be made into songs only in Albanian. But, only in Albanian they are part of the daily life of children of all ages, without distinction.

This is us. A society where songs promoting crime are heard everywhere and at any time. Beyond everyday life, they have often accompanied the election campaigns of political parties. The crimes that were committed during them are similar to those warned in the same songs.

We've created this atmosphere where a fight on social media is more than a misunderstanding – it's a reflection of unspoken tensions that we, as a society, have never addressed. These tensions are like open wounds that surface where there should be peace: in schools, on playgrounds, in conversations between friends.

What about school?

A sad story, no matter how much you raise the salary of the nannies, no government can raise the average of the 9-year school. Because yes, during the last 30 years, the majority of students who find secondary school very difficult actually went to the teacher's school (without completely generalizing, but this is the reality of the majority). Because yes, district universities that focus on teaching, we all know that they have functioned as mines for their staff.

Our schools do not at all focus on the formation of the individual, because to find a place as a teacher in a school near the center, you will have to have a party contribution, not only a professional one. If you do not have the full professional capacity, it is not a problem. You have a strong friend. Because the strong of all levels are a factor.

Can we expect peaceful children when all around them the models promote the opposite? When does the media give space to praise those who have "resolved conflicts" with weapons? When successes are seen as the result of arrogance and not work? This tragedy did not just happen from a hasty word between two children. She is the product of a society where violence is normalized and where value is seen as weakness.

The need for a national awakening

If this country is going to have a future, then we have to stop here. This loss of an innocent life should wake us up. We need to look deeper and accept our collective responsibility. It is not only the fault of the school that did not intervene, nor of the families that did not foresee this conflict. It is the fault of a culture that does not value human life, that nurtures violence as a way to gain respect.

We all killed that child, in that school. Even the other child, who used the knife, we destroyed his life, his future, we killed him forever.

Everyone!

We!
