The arrest of Ilir Mete

If the former President were summoned to appear at the Prosecutor's Office or the police and there the measure of detention was communicated to him, the TV time last night would be spent discussing the charges, the content, and not the manner in which he was arrested.

To watch videos on YouTube, the platform warns you if you are under 18 years old, while an Italian commentator, in the context of the debate on immigrants, said: look at how and what is done in this country to the former President and imagine what they can do to him an immigrant from Bangladesh.

It is not the first time that the police present an ugly, unprofessional spectacle, with arrests that, in the end, however, have a destination.

There are many sensational cases that time has shown that, except for the bull, it has not brought anything good.

The scene is the same: cars with civilian license plates, police in civilian uniforms, face masks followed by "popular" exaltation, a camera placed semi-randomly and endless debates on the screens.

The operational forces (elite unit) are used not to do the job they are paid for (stopping dangerous people) but to give a show.

If this is the "protocol", the aim is not to "perform the duty", but to humiliate the one who is presumed innocent until the final decision of the Court.

The same scene with the acting Governor, the same scene with the former minister, the same scene with a professor, the same scene with the former President.

Apparently, the word dignity is foreign to those who "do the job".

When the public sees dramatic arrests by special forces, the majority perception is that a criminal has undoubtedly been arrested, thereby undermining the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence.

The repeated spectacles of "police protocol", in addition to affecting the fate of an individual, also damage the image of the institution.

When the police are used to create spectacles, justice falls prey to biased perceptions and evaluations, and the justice system turns into a public arena for lynchings.

Justice is given and sought in the courtroom. There will be judged not what we all know, but what convincingly proves the accusations.

A trial must not only be fair, it must also appear so.

Otherwise, we go back to the times when village songs were sung:

"As soon as dawn arose the whole village,

Oh what joy we have,

Reshati was arrested today.

We will sing about Security!"
