The case of Assane Thiaw , a 27-year-old asylum seeker from Senegal, has been discussed by the Italian Senate. He spent about nine months in the Permanent Repatriation Center (CPR) in Milan and, according to the network “ Mai più lager – No ai CPR ”, on October 30, 2025, he was taken by the police and transferred to the Gjadri camp in Albania, managed by the Italian government since 2024.

According to reports, Thiaw has mental health issues. During his stay in CPR, he showed clear psychological signs.

Videos shared by activists show the young man faking eating and isolating himself from others, while other asylum seekers report that he alternated between laughing and screaming for no apparent reason.

A few days after his transfer to Albania, on 10 November 2025, Thiaw was declared unfit for residence at the Gjadri CPR and returned to Italy. Since then, his current whereabouts have been unknown, raising concerns that he may have been abandoned without being taken into care by state institutions.

Senator Ilaria Cucchi, from the Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra, has filed a Question Time addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, which was discussed on January 15, 2026 in the Senate chamber.

She requested clarification on the criteria used for keeping Thiaw in the Milan CPR and on the measures taken for his health and social care.

This case raises concerns about the functioning of CPRs and respect for the rights of detained persons, especially when it comes to individuals with mental health problems.

Italian law provides for prior medical examinations and detentions only when the health of detainees is not at risk, but numerous reports indicate contrary practices, including the arbitrary use of psychiatric medications, solitary confinement, and other abuses.

The main question remains: where is Assane Thiaw and what measures have been taken to ensure his protection and care?

His case is a call to institutions and the public, demanding transparency and respect for the fundamental rights of asylum seekers.
