Poland and Slovakia were among countries bordering Ukraine to ban imports of its agricultural goods that flowed to the European Union after moves by Brussels to help Kiev export agricultural goods, including the 'solidarity lanes initiative' and a liberalization of temporary tariffs and quotas.

Both of these countries are now also citing health concerns, in addition to those of unfair competition to domestic production. Slovak authorities say 1,500 tons of wheat imported from Ukraine to Slovakia were found to contain chlorpyrifos, a pesticide banned in the EU in 2020.

The wheat, as Euractiv says, was not intended for the internal market of the European Union, but for third countries. Poland also raised phytosanitary concerns, which is why it said it has raised the alarm several times through the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food.

According to a spokesperson of the European Commission, since January 1, almost 28 announcements have been made from different countries of the bloc regarding shipments of agricultural products from Ukraine.

Hungary also extended the temporary ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products a few days ago to include honey, wine, bread, sugar and a range of meat products and vegetables.

What is coming to Albania?

Last August, a ship with 6 tons of wheat from Ukraine arrived in the port of Durrës, which is not known if it has undergone tests.

Before the start of the war and the sanctions that were imposed on Russia, according to the data of the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), Albania imported over 40 percent of the total grains from Russia, while 4 percent from Ukraine.
