Investigations related to the death in the cell of Enver Sheshi, in the serious event that happened on Saturday, have been started by the judicial police. Until now, the preliminary actions have been carried out, the forensic examination has been ordered and the materials have been handed over to the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana.

In connection with the case in question, the Albanian Helsinki Committee, an organization that oversees the respect of basic human rights according to the convention ratified by Albania, has also been activated.

The Chairman of the Committee, Erinda Skëndaj, said in an interview for Breaking on Top News that they had a hard time learning details about the death of Enver Sheshi, adding that the representatives of the Committee were ping-ponged by the institutions.

"We have not managed to get the complete information that we encountered, not only for this case but also for similar cases, we remember the case of Bilbil Hasan in 2020. We have been informed that we cannot be given information because the prosecution is conducting an investigation. This information is contradictory to the other data, because when we went to the prosecutor's office to get information, we learned that the prosecutor's office has not even started the investigations and there is no reference to the report for the specific case. We have turned to the police, have they started the actions, we are in the process of verification", said Skendaj

Skendaj cites international human rights standards that are respected in such cases.

"Whenever there is a loss of life under the supervision of state authorities, it is the state that has the obligation and the burden to prove that the treatment of the person was good and that the state was not at fault with its actions, or inactions, that led to the loss of the person's life", she added.

In the Committee's assessment, prison arrest measures should be given only in cases where the law provides that the arrested persons pose a threat to society, to destroy evidence, or to escape.

Enver Sheshi was accused of creating a VAT fraud scheme, a charge punishable by up to six years in prison. His case becomes even more flagrant, based on the fact that he was charged with the same charge for which he was previously convicted.
