President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with a 35% tariff on goods, further escalating the trade war with one of the United States' most important partners.
He has also suggested that overall tariffs on other US trading partners could increase.
It is not yet clear whether these new tariffs, expected to take effect on August 1, will apply to all Canadian goods, or whether Trump's warning will only affect a limited group of goods on which the US currently imposes tariffs.
"Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work toward the revised August 1 deadline," Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a post on X.
Trump's latest statements represent another example of an unexpected policy that has left investors, trading partners, businesses, and American citizens in uncertainty, as the economic terrain changes frequently, sometimes even by the hour.
Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Canada comes after he sent letters to world leaders a week ago, notifying them of the tariffs that will be applied from August 1, if no trade deal is reached.
Canada and the United States are engaged in trade talks with the aim of reaching an agreement before July 21.
