May 5 is an important historical date for Albanians, as the Martyrs of the Nation are commemorated.

On National Martyrs' Day, there are many names of all times who are remembered with gratitude not only for their eternal values and the contribution they gave to the liberation of the country for a better future, but also all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom, democracy, human rights and the dignity of every Albanian.

Martyrs' Day originates on May 5, 1942, when Qemal Stafa was killed, who with his activity became a symbol of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War.

After the declaration of Independence in 1912 until 1945, the Albanian state did not create a legal status for the martyrs of the Motherland. During the National-Liberation war, the first efforts were made to honor the martyrs fallen on the battlefields. After the liberation, on August 28, 1945, the presidency of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist Council approved the law No. 109 "On the compensation of the families of the martyrs and invalids of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War".

This law sanctioned the treatment of the families of patriots who had fought and fallen for the homeland even before the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, during the National Renaissance, in the wars for independence, thus marking the first attempt for an integral law for the martyrs of the Motherland.

In the time of communism, May 5 became a tradition. It was a marked day! The distinguishing feature of this day was the visits to the cemeteries of the martyrs of the Anti-Fascist National-Liberation War and the visits to the families of the martyrs. Martyrs' cemeteries were built in every district center. Albania, apart from 26 such that were in the centers of the districts, had two others, completely separate and belonging to the two martyr villages, Kuçi of Kurveles and Peza of Tirana. While in the latter, all the leadership of the party and the state were humbled and honored, both on May 5 and on September 16, the day of the Peza Conference, in Kuç, as a rule, the students of the village school and the families of the martyrs went.

In honor of the memory of those who fell for the country's freedom, tributes are paid by the highest heads of the Albanian state every year in the Martyrs' Cemetery. Even today it is expected that there will be tributes in their honor.
