The "slavery" of the bar houses, the Albanian tells how he was held

An illegal Albanian immigrant who paid £4,000 to cross to the UK by boat to work in pubs has revealed he was held captive by traffickers for more than 15 months.

19-year-old Besmir Sula was recruited by Albanian gangsters as soon as he arrived on the island and managed to escape from them when the police raided one of the "investments" for the cultivation of cannabis.

The young man says that as soon as he arrived in Britain, he was sent by the authorities to an immigration center to be moved to one of the hotels designated by the government for asylum seekers.

It was there that he was picked up by Albanian traffickers and moved to cannabis-filled homes in the rural areas of Cranbrook and Hawkhurst in Kent.

The boy was then "waxed" inside as he had the important task of looking after more than 500 cannabis roots, a drug widely used by British youth, but not only.

In December Sula was arrested during a police operation and appeared before the court on charges of trafficking and production of narcotics, charges which he denied throughout.

His legal representative, John FitzGerald, said the teenager, who had no previous criminal record, was the victim of an organized crime group that had exploited him for a long time.

" He is from a very small and poor village in Albania where he worked all night in a bakery for 300 euros a month. Then the boy borrowed 4,500 euros from a close person to travel illegally to Britain, where he was promised that he would find the life he dreamed of , "said the lawyer.

Fitzgerald closed the defense by saying that Sula was a naive young man who best represented the victim of modern slavery.

Since his arrest, Sula has remained in custody, with his lawyer pleading with the court to be lenient. Judge Douglas Marks Moore ordered that Sula serve the sentence in a youth facility and then be deported to Albania.
