Greece in crisis for workers

The epidemic of lack of labor force has affected neighboring Greece, like every country in the European Union that is suffering from brain aging, but also shortages in the market for unskilled workers, in sectors such as agriculture, fishing or construction.

This issue has sparked fierce debates in Greek politics as well, where there was a clash in Parliament between former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Dimitris Kairides.

The discussion between them has stopped at the Government Amendment to give opportunities to illegal workers, mainly from third countries, to stay and work in Greece.

Minister Karidis has defended the Amendment arguing that without the immigrants there is a risk that the olive trees in the plots around Greece will not be harvested this season, causing the country an economic damage that is estimated from 1 to 1.5 billion euros.

"In Ierapetra there are half of the country's greenhouses and in Ilia and Mesini. Each greenhouse needs one worker per hectare. 30 thousand workers are needed in Ierapetra. Others say that there is a risk that the olives will not be sold and we will lose 1-1.5 billion euros from the total value of olive oil of 3 billion euros", he emphasized.

Criticized that Greece is changing its immigration policy, Karidis made it clear that the "New Democracy" government has no intention of withdrawing from the amendment to legalize immigrants who work illegally, saying: "We must give solutions without ideology and shouting ".

According to Karidis, the regulation does not legalize illegal immigrants, but gives them the right to work.

"The amendment is mainly about legal entries. People who came legally. Albanians who came here and worked, and for some reason the permit expired and was not renewed. It gives you no right other than work. It does not grant the right to family reunification or citizenship. It is not about new entrants, but those who arrived before 2021 and only if they have a work contract. We use an agreement that has been in place since 2005 and was reactivated in 2014. The agreement covers approximately 30,000 people. It has nothing to do with people coming to Greece illegally. It is about people who were legally in Greece and failed to renew their residence permit for some reason. They are mainly of Albanian, Georgian and Filipino origin", declared the Minister of Immigration in the Assembly.
