Albania, the country with the fourth youngest population in Europe

Although it is aging, Albania continues to have one of the youngest populations in Europe.

According to Eurostat the median age (which divides the population into two equal parts, one below the median age and the other above the median age) was 37.6 years old in 2021, up from 35.2 years the previous year. The median age of Albania is much lower than the European Union average of 44.1 years.

Albania has the fourth youngest population in Europe, after Kosovo (30.5 years - year 2020), Turkey (32.8) and Iceland (36.7).

In the region, the population with the oldest age is in Serbia (44 years old), while other countries such as Montenegro and North Macedonia are approaching the 40-year-old limit.

According to Eurostat, in 2021 the EU's median age was 44.1, up from 43.9 in 2020. Most capital regions in the EU had relatively young populations, although the French region of Mayotte had, by far, the oldest median age low (17.7 years old). followed by Guyana (26.3 years).

In Europe, the oldest country is Italy (47.6), followed by Germany (45.9), Portugal (45.8), Greece (45.5), Bulgaria (45), Spain (44.7).

The median age of women reaches 39.1 years, of men 37.3

The median age of the population in our country is increasing rapidly from year to year, signaling the aging of the population. During one year, the median age for both sexes almost increased by one year, while in the last 10 years it increased by 4.6 years for women and 5.5 years for men.

The median age for the total population reached 38.2 years as of January 2022, compared to 37.6 years in 2021. Throughout the last decade, the country's population aged by 5 years.

Because they live longer, the median age of women in Albania is higher than that of men.

In 2022, the median age of Albanian women reached 39.1 years (median age means that 50% of women are below this age and 50% above this age), increasing by almost 11 months per year, INSTAT reported.

While the median age of men reached 37.3 years or 2.3 years lower than women. The median age of men in Albania, as everywhere in the world, is lower than that of women because they have a lower life expectancy of at least 5 years.
