The Vetting Commission decided today to dismiss the judge, Shefkie Mataj (Demiraj), who is also the last judge who participated in the trial of Gërdec before the Vetting. The decision was taken by members of the Independent Qualification Commission, consisting of Roland Ilia, Pamela Qirko and Valbona Sanxhaktari.

Shefkie Demiraj appeared 2 days before the KPK to get acquainted with the results of the investigation for the three criteria. The Vetting Commission has concluded that the judge does not fully justify with legal sources of income a three-story house + attic in Tirana built during the period 1998-2012, with an area of ​​about 461 m2 and a declared value of 20 million ALL.

The Vetting Commission also found financial impossibility for the purchase of a Benz type vehicle in 2014, against the price of 950 thousand ALL, while the international observer Steven Kessler asked the judge how it is possible that the Ministry of Health had allocated about 30 thousand SUD for the treatment of the boy. The judge gave detailed explanations and overruled every aggravating finding of the panel.

Shefkie Demiraj was part of the first instance jury for the Gërdec file. In March 2012, 4 years after the tragedy, the Court of First Instance of Tirana handed down the verdicts for the 29 defendants in the Gërdec file, declaring 7 of them innocent. The jury consisted of Fatmira Hajdari, Ridvan Hado and Shefkie Demiraj.
