The world organization "Save the Children" has published the report for 2021 where it says that the number of children pushed to the brink of poverty in the European Union increased by 200,000 in 2021 or to 19.6 million.
According to the report one in four children in the bloc was on the brink of poverty and social exclusion at the end of 2021, due to a combination of factors including the cost of living, the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in lost income for many families.
Save the Children Germany advocacy manager for child poverty and social inequality, Eric Großhaus, described the figure as "devastating" and urged Germany, which accounts for over 10% of children living in poverty in the EU, "to finally fulfill its promises to tackle child poverty".
The situation in some of the countries for which Save the Children collected the most recent data is likely to have become more bleak due to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as well as the negative consequences it has had on food prices and energy.
40% of Romanian households, for example, experienced a decrease in their income in 2022, compared to the previous year. This despite the fact that their expenses have increased by 98%.
Children with immigrant parents, refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented and unaccompanied children are among the hardest hit. Also at risk are children in single-parent families, severely disadvantaged families, differently abled children and children belonging to ethnic minorities.
Save the Children said it sees hope in the implementation of the European Child Guarantee to prevent and combat social exclusion by guaranteeing children effective access to a range of key services, including free early childhood education and care. , free education, free health care, healthy food and adequate housing.
The proposal was presented by the European Commission in 2019, with the approval of the European Council in June 2021. However, only 19 of the 27 member states of the bloc have submitted the National Action Plan they were supposed to draw up by mid-March 2022.
"The European Child Guarantee holds the key to addressing growing inequality and providing a better future for millions of children. "Governments must ensure that they make full use of this framework against child poverty, as well as use national action plans to implement it," Save the Children's Head for Europe said in a statement.
"Now is the time for bold decisions and strategic funding to rapidly expand protections and mitigate crises for current and future generations of children," she added.
