Eva Buzo, the first woman to swim across the channel of Otranto, completing the personal challenge left halfway a year ago, can be found today in the Skela area. In an interview for Top Channel, from the museum house of Independence, Eva starts the story by showing her Albanian roots.
"My grandfather is Albanian, this is the reason why I am in Albania, and I feel myself a part of Albania. I feel bad that my grandfather did not come to Albania again since he left Berat. I feel it is my responsibility to fulfill his last wish, to meet his family members and mine".
The Australian of Albanian origin says that she undertook this challenge not only to carry her grandfather's legacy to the country, but also to make Albania known in the country where she lives.
"I live in Australia, and they do not have accurate information about Albania and Albanians. Many people ask me where Albania is located, and I tell them under the boot of Italy. When I entered the swimming Olympics for the first time, I knew that Albania and Italy were very close in terms of position, I measured it and it was a distance of about 74 km and I thought that it should do this challenge. Up to that point the furthest distance I had done was 20 km, and it took me time to prepare myself mentally and physically. I started this challenge last year, but after 20 hours of swimming my mind gave up, while my body was fine physically. These 12 months I worked more with the psychological part than the physical part, and the result showed that everything paid off".
Day and night at sea, this exhausting challenge, Eva tells through tears, has brought to life the story of thousands of Albanians who have used the Otranto canal to emigrate, even those who have lost their lives
"I have lived the story of all the Albanians who have crossed this channel to find a better life beyond the Albanian shores. As a lawyer that I am, I work with social issues and I always ask people to be positive towards immigrants. When I was swimming, I couldn't help but remember the stories of dozens of Albanians who drowned looking for a better life".
Unlike the day before when she touched the shores of Karaburun after swimming for 35 hours and 17 minutes in a length of 92 km, and could not speak, today Eva has clear ideas. The next challenge will be the 6 channels that the Italian lawyer Paulo Pinto has passed./TCH
