Car cemetery at the entrance of Gjirokastra

Drone footage shows a "graveyard" of cars, which has been expanding year after year at the entrance to the tourist town of Gjirokastra, just a few meters from the national road.

The destroyed cars belong to cases of legal offenses or accidents and are in the custody of the State Police until the end of court proceedings.

13 years ago, the Albanian government decided with a Normative Act, the removal of motor vehicles, which were located near the national roads, but in many areas it seems that the law has not been implemented.

Moreover, in Gjirokastra, the police themselves moved dozens of cars from a military area to Dragot i Tepelena at the entrance of Gjirokastra, setting up a new car cemetery.

These days, the Minister of the Interior of Albania, Taulant Balla, issued a new order with immediate effect for the removal of these "cemeteries" of cars, and in many cities actions have been initiated by the Inspectorate of Territory Protection and the police themselves.

The Voice of America asked the police of Gjirokastra if it would intervene to move this car cemetery erected by itself at the entrance of the city protected by UNESCO, but until the preparation of this material it did not receive an answer./ VOA
