After the visit to Ukraine, Biden visits Poland

After visiting Kiev, where he stayed for over five hours, the American president, Joe Biden, has arrived in Poland, where he is expected to meet on Tuesday with the Polish president, Andrzej Duda.

The unannounced visit to Ukraine, the first since Russia began its occupation of the country almost a year ago, once again underlined Washington's support for Kiev.

Biden met on February 20 with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the Mariyinskiy Palace in the center of the Ukrainian capital.

"One year later, Kiev stands," Biden said, speaking from a podium decorated with US and Ukrainian flags.

" And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. Americans stand with you and the world stands with you. Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. Americans stand with you and the world stands with you," he said.

He added that the US is preparing a new shipment of "critical equipment" to Ukraine, which he said will include artillery munitions and air surveillance radars worth $500 million. Biden also announced new sanctions against the Russian state.

The US is among the largest providers of aid to the Ukrainian military. Since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24 of last year, Washington has sent defense and logistics equipment worth tens of billions of dollars.
