The president of the publishing house "Onufri", Bujar Hudhri, has sued the mayor of Tetova, Bilall Kasami, in court. The lawsuit filed at the Basic Court of Tetova is related to the theft and promotion of the books of the writer Ismail Kadare.

The entire theft was discovered by the social network of the mayor of Tetova, Kasami, who in a post announced about five thousand books that the Municipality was donating to Tetova high schools. This post was enough to notice that the donated Kadare novels contained a different cover than those published by the “Onufri” Publishing House, which also holds the copyright for all of Kadare’s work.

In a statement to the media, Publisher Bujar Hudhri explained that this legal violation is not only a personal but also a public concern since it concerns the works of the great Albanian writer Ismail Kadare.

"I came to Tetovo to file a lawsuit against the municipality of Tetovo and its mayor Bilall Kasami. For a concern that is not only mine but I think is a public concern. Starting from a post he made on his social network, where he declares that he has donated approximately five thousand books to five schools in Tetovo. And he has accompanied this with videos and photos of the books. From a very simple examination of the material on display, I have concluded that all the books that the municipality has purchased and donated to the high schools of Tetovo are stolen."

Gudhri emphasized that it is scandalous how the state promotes theft.

"This is the reason for my lawsuit against the municipality of Tetovo. Because it is scandalous for the state to take a stolen commodity and donate it. Second, because they are donated to public school libraries, which means that such stolen books, printed in a scandalous manner, without any quality, and even halved. These books remain definitively and generation after generation in these libraries. This is the doubly great damage that is caused."

Hudhri pointed out the fact that Kadare was declared an "Honorary Citizen" of Tetovo by the same mayor, while his stolen books are being bought today. According to him, this is absurd.

"Two years ago I brought Ismail Kadarena here. I am his publisher. Tetovo made him its honorary citizen. I cannot understand the mayor who, here, declares him an honorary citizen while on the other hand steals books. This is scandalous. In a civilized world this is unacceptable. How can someone steal and the state supports, stimulates and promotes him. This is my concern."

He says he has no knowledge of who is behind the printing and piracy of Kadare's books, thus causing moral damage to the writer's image.

"I don't know who prints these books and I have no information to file a lawsuit. The lawsuit is against the municipality of Tetovo, which promotes and buys them. Kadare's books are clearly stolen from the cover. Printed on scandalous paper, which constitutes not only economic damage, but also moral damage to us as a publishing house, but also to the writer Ismail Kadare. Everyone knows that the rights to publish Kadare are held by "Onufri" and no other publishing house."

Asked what he will seek in compensation, publisher Hudhri emphasized that he will seek maximum punishment and fines for the thieves and perpetrators, so that they become an example, describing this process as unacceptable and scandalous.
