The trial on the merits of the "Meta" case begins today

The trial of former President Ilir Meta begins this Monday at the Special Court. The leader of the Freedom Party has asked the Special Court of Kosovo to broadcast the court hearings against him live for the media.

"Out of respect for the citizens whom I have served with dedication and a deep sense of patriotism in the highest state offices (President, Speaker of the Parliament and Prime Minister), I address the GJKKO with a public request to guarantee the live broadcast of this entire process, from the first session to the end," Meta wrote in a post on social media.

The president of the Freedom Party says that the media should be guaranteed a live broadcast signal, emphasizing that "Transparency before Albanian citizens and accountability is an obligation for every institution and every public official."

Ilir Meta has been in custody since October 2024, and SPAK has charged him with corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, in connection with the Cez-Dia affair and LSI lobbying in the US. His ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi is also a defendant, against whom there is a mandatory appearance order.

According to the Special Prosecution Office, Meta and Kryemadhi used a series of corrupt schemes, their influence and political power to favor certain businesses in return for the reward received or promised, to launder money from corruption and hid assets and did not declare significant expenses. When the case went to trial on March 18 of this year, Meta and Kryemadhi requested that the case be dismissed, arguing that there was no criminal offense, or alternatively, that it be returned for further investigation.

In today's session, the court is expected to decide whether to accept the request for a summary trial for the other three defendants, Monika Kryemadhi's mother, Fatima, and Ema Çoku, a friend of the former MP, both accused of money laundering, and former AKEP leader Pirro Xhixho, accused of corruption.
