The Durres Prosecutor's Office is investigating for abuse of office the officials of the Port of Durres who allegedly allowed the export of toxic waste from Albania to Thailand.
Confidential sources claimed for VNA that based on article 202 of the criminal code for the "transportation of toxic waste" is being investigated and the company "Kompania Sokolaj shpk. According to the indictment, "Sokolaj shpk" bought the waste near KURUM and transported it to Thailand without obtaining the approval of the host country.
Albanian and international laws provide that the responsibility for the disposal of toxic substances starts with the producer who must ensure their destruction and then with the relevant bodies that monitor their transport and disposal. The Ministry of Environment reacted yesterday by removing the responsibility after not giving authorization for the transport of toxic waste from Durrës to Thailand.
It was this ministry that two years ago granted a license for the transport of toxic substances to the company "Sokolaj shpk". From a cursory observation it seems that there is neither expertise nor experience for this type of transport.
However, this appears to be only the tip of the iceberg of a scandal that is likely larger than the cargo of two Maersk ships. In a communication with the international organization Groundwork (which gave the alarm about ships with toxic waste), its leaders confirmed for VNA that during the month of April, the same illegal transport procedure with illegal waste took place from the Port of Durrës to that of Guangzhou. At least 100 containers are in this port waiting to return to Albania. The same fate awaits the other two ships that are on the way back to the Port of Durrës.
Sokolaj shpk is a company founded in 2006, initially in Lushnje, while later it moved its headquarters to Durrës. Its shares are owned 100 percent by Gjovana Sokolaj, a citizen born in Iballe of Puka and resident in Durrës.
The company's object of activity is the collection, processing and sale of industrial and non-industrial metal waste. Export - import of non-hazardous waste, such as zinc, copper, etc. Bar- coffee. Collection, transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
Last year, this company invoiced 820 thousand euros in revenue and realized a profit of about 40 thousand euros./VNA.al
